The Brincliffe Oaks
Once there were two oak trees
As hard as any wood
But the council at the time
Said they must be budged. But years they had been up
From when they were grown
Right here on this ground
So old and well known. They had to be chopped
And not just the branches lopped
(If it was you and I
We would have been caught)To steal away two trees
Despite what they are worth
Never mind they will say
There's always another birth. But the council didn't know
And didn't care for future reference
They looked at each other
And knew no reverence.Nor heed for the archives
Where their history could be read
It's still not possible for me
to go to bed.
This is the tree from which I fell
on a very hot day
talking about Indiana Jones
and suffered from shock
although I was safe.
And this was the tree on which I sat
before my stepdad threw away the stump
So I was clever to move away
when it hit my mum. Owen Barber
