'Have you got a job, Linda. '''Well no not really, a bit of part-time now and again - at the golf club actually. '
'Did you and Don discuss what you would live on? '
'Oh no problem. Don's got a wonderful job You've only got to see the car he drives to know that and he's always got plenty of money, why when we had that weekend in Brighton last month ..... Oh''
Oh dear, thought Mrs Priddoe, is that Thirty Forty? No. I don't think so, the wife doesn't look particularly bothered.
'So that's where he was and all that fuss about not being able to find his new golf sweater'
'I shouldn't have ....'
'No matter, it's not important. Now listen to me carefully. Don has not got a good job nor a lot of money and the car does not belong to him.'
Mrs Priddoe could hardly breathe, she saw the waiter hovering and quickly picked up her empty tea cup, straining even harder to catch every word.
'He never holds a job down for more than six months and is completely financially dependent on me'
The girl had started to cry.
'I - I, don't understand. '
I do, thought Mrs Priddoe smugly, he knows which side his bread's buttered. Definitely Forty-Thirty. Wait though - what's this .....
'Look dear, I am a very wealthy widow and Don is my only child. Oh, I know he's a scoundrel and wastrel but someone has to take care of his wife and my grandchildren. He knows you see, what I would do if he ever left them, he'd never get another penny piece from me. So you see it's hopeless. '
Mrs Priddoe sagged in her chair and almost dropped the teacup. Don's mother stood up.
' Come dear. dry your eyes and I'll pay on the way out. '
As they threaded their way through the tables,Mrs Priddoe relaxed. Well, she murmured to herself, well, well. Game, Set and Match. I think.
END.
